If you’re enrolled to start Dental School in the Fall: CONGRATULATIONS! Every year the application pool becomes more and more competitive and there are an increasing amount of wonderful candidates for a limited number of seats. Dentistry is a wonderful profession that is extremely rewarding and the perfect combination of artistry and science!
Looking back to my first day of my DS1 year, all I can remember was how excited I was. All the stress, hard work, and tests had finally paid off and my dreams of becoming a dentist had finally come to fruition. Little did I know there was NOTHING that could have prepared me for the first two years of dental school, but I did realize there are a couple of things that could make it slightly easier.
I’ve collected my favorite tried-and-true items and listed them below! From scrubs to backpacks I’m sharing it all for the average dental/medical/college student!
SCRUBS
Depending on the fit/color you’re looking for, I have different favorites. After spending a small fortune on scrubs, I’ve rounded up my favorites. Also, you can definitely get scrubs that are cheaper/more expensive depending on the site, company, or promos going on but these are my tried and true top 3. If you’re a first year, I recommend at least having 3 pairs and you’ll probably start needing more pairs after each year.
- Blue Sky Scrubs: ($70-80) Looser fit, great color choices, and LOVE that it comes in custom pant lengths
- Greys Anatomy: ($50-80) Great fit and material, very comfortable, but constantly changing styles and colors
- FIGS: ($80-90 set) These are my OVERALL FAVORITE. They are so comfortable, well made, and overall have a great loose, but fitted cut to them. The only con is that they are slightly more pricey, but since I wear scrubs 5 days a week, I don’t mind the splurge. Use my code HERE and get 20% off!
WATER BOTTLE
Its so easy to get dehydrated while you’re in class, lab, or clinic so having a water bottle is so helpful to remind me to drink water throughout the day. I LOVE my camelback that I listed below, but I also included some cute, more fun options!
JACKET
This is an ABSOLUTE MUST for me. I bring a jacket everyday because our lecture halls are freezing! After bringing maybe dozens of different jackets, I’ve found that North Face Fleeces are my favorite. I wear black the most, because they match all my scrubs, but I definitely have at least 5 other colors… whoops!
HAIR
I’m definitely the person who doesn’t like having their hair up all day. I’m constantly taking it down and putting it up between patients. So if you’re like me, I would definitely recommend these hair scrunchies. They don’t leave creases in your hair and I never lose it, because they’re easy to spot!
SHOES
I’m on my feet CONSTANTLY. Next year in clinic, I imagine its only going to be more so it’s so important to find tennis shoes that have a lot of support and allow your feet to “breathe”. I personally love the Nike Roshe’s or Tanjuns! They’re so comfortable and stylish!
BACKPACK
I was never the girl who splurged on backpacks. I think it’s because I knew I was going to want to a new one the next year. But before dental school started, I decided to take the plunge and try a Northface backpack and I absolutely LOVE it. Its comfortable, has tons of storage and pockets, and can fit my 15″ MacBook Pro. I personally own the black and pink North Face Surge.
RELAXATION
School is going to be stressful, no doubt about it. After my first year of dental school, I knew I needed a little time to myself every so often. My best friend and I started a post-Gross Anatomy exam ritual with an hour-long massage at Massage Heights! It was an hour of pure relaxation after hours of dissecting and studying! I’ve loved every experience with them and recently, my partners over at Massage Heights let me try out their Microdermabrasion facial! The facial was so relaxing and the next day, my skin felt and looked amazing! I’m definitely making it part of my Relaxation Routine! If you’re considering microdermabrasion or just looking for a place to get a facial, try out Massage Heights!
I hope this helps! Dental school has been a rodeo up until this point, but I am so excited to be taking NBDE Pt. 1 in a few weeks and then on to clinic in July. If you have any questions about starting dental school, how to get in, or even just want more recommendations, feel free to leave a comment below!
Work hard, study hard, and change lives!

What are the steps or how do you know if you can be a dentist. My dream is to be a dentist or dental hygienist but I have a almost two year old son, I’m scared that I won’t make it.
